Presentation: Ways to Leave a Legacy and Not a Logjam
What happens after someone dies is rarely simple, and too often, it is left for loved ones to untangle in the middle of grief. In this practical, approachable talk, Rachel Donnelly shares five high-impact ways individuals and professionals can help reduce chaos, confusion, and conflict before it is urgently needed.
Drawing from real-world after loss experience and insights from her book Late to Your Own Funeral, Rachel will walk through concrete steps clients can take now to organize key information, clarify wishes, and create a legacy that is a gift rather than a burden. Attendees will learn how small, proactive actions can dramatically ease the load on executors and families, where professional organizers naturally fit into this work, and when to refer clients for additional after loss or legacy support. This session is designed to be immediately useful, highly relatable, and grounded in real life, not theory.
Rachel Donnelly is the author of Late To Your Own Funeral, founder of AfterLight and co-founder of Professionals of After Loss Services (PALS). Her mission is simple: to help the living deal with dying. She created AfterLight to help clients navigate the administrative maze of estate settlement and legacy planning after experiencing the overwhelming process herself, serving as executor for both her mother's and uncle's estates while working full-time and raising two children. Prior to founding AfterLight, she worked in developm ent for institutions including Emory University, Georgia Tech, and the Shepherd Center Foundation. A graduate of Agnes Scott College, Donnelly lives in Decatur with her husband and two children.
